You’ve heard me say this hundreds of times, “you can’t out train a bad diet”. I’ll beat that over the head as long as it takes because it’s so damn true.  We all want to look better naked, however our metabolism is a huge factor in deciding how we burn fat and at what rate. So I’m going to give you five things you can start doing right away. These are simple things you can implement, and will make a huge difference, especially if you’re in your 40’s.  Like all good things, increasing your metabolism will take some time, so don’t expect to have a six back by the end of the week.

  1. Eat Enough Food!
Too many of us don’t actually eat enough food to sustain our activity level. It’s simple, if you don’t eat enough, your body gets greedy and stores what it can. If your body gets efficient as storing calories as fat, then it’s not going to be very efficient at burning calories. If you’re on some crazy diet or “cleanse” that has you eating in the 1000 calorie or less range, your metabolism will suffer.

  1. Eat enough of the right foods.
Eating enough is just not enough. You have to eat the correct food in order to fire up your metabolism.  If your diet consists of carbs and fats with minimal protein, you’re probably going to have a pretty crappy metabolism.  Include protein with every meal and make sure you eat enough protein. How much is enough? There is much debate around this and really no correct answer as everyone is different. I personally like to start with the 1 gram / 1 lb of bodyweight and tweak from there. So try it, weigh and measure your food for a week and see if you’re actually getting enough protein. You’ll be shocked.

  1. Eat Breakfast
Skipping breakfast never helped anyone. I really don’t care how you feel in the morning, you have to eat some protein, carbs and a LITTLE fat. Yes fat is good but we get so much from trace that eating HEALTHY fat only contributes to your overall fat intake. So if you eat super clean, then the trace is low and you should be taking in more fat. I know most of you are busy and in a rush out there so here’s my go to breakfast. Scrambled eggs, with the majority being egg whites, and some kind of fruit. Or if I’m in a serious rush, instant oatmeal and some fruit. Wakes up your metabolism from the fast and sets up to crush for the rest of your day.

  1. Get Enough Quality Sleep
If we don’t get enough sleep, we pay the price. You all know what I”m talking about. You hit the caffein a little harder, reach for those “comfort” foods and are all wound up during the day. By the end of the work day we’re too tired to exercise so we go home and crash on the couch. Or we go home, do a bunch of errands, and fail to get another night of quality sleep. “It’s not so much that if you sleep, you will lose weight, but if you are sleep-deprived, meaning that you are not getting enough minutes of sleep or good quality sleep, your metabolism will not function properly,” explains Michael Breus, PhD.
Just how much sleep do you need? On average 7.5-9 hours depending on your stress levels, activity level and circumstance. I know some of you think this is crazy but how important is your health to you? If you want to lose some weight, sleep is one of the the three most important things you need to master.
Some of you guys actually get enough time in bed but the quality of your sleep sucks. One thing that can help is turning off screens before bed and wind down with some reading.

  1. Move
Whatever your choice of exercise is, you need to do it consistently. Moving will increase your metabolism big time. The more intense the workout, the greater increase in metabolism. This is one of the reason that CrossFit workouts are so effective. They allow us to burn fat at rest because we turned up the heat in the gym. Lower impact and longer workouts also increase metabolism and although not as effective, they are extremely important.
Implement these five things today and turn your body into a fat burning machine. If you’re missing one or more of these you really need to fill in those gaps and complete the package. They all work together and each of them have a direct effect on each other.
